Enchanted Rock With Kids

Spring Blooms

After almost 3 years in Texas, we decided an Enchanted Rock trip with the kids was in order! Just a short drive outside main street Fredericksburg, its an easy day trip from San Antonio as well. We’d been told it was a fairly short hike, but warned it was steep! And oh man, it is! Taking kids anywhere adds a new layer of challenges, but overcoming those and letting our kids see and explore the world is something that is extremely important to our family.

So, in April, our wonderful friends, The Jobes, joined us for a day at Enchanted Rock. We hiked the Summit Trail with our collective 5 kids (ages 15 months-7yrs) and I’m going to share with you my top tips for going to Enchanted Rock and making it fun for the kiddos while you’re there! Check out the tips and then scroll to see our day captured in photos!

Tips for Enchanted Rock with Kids

1-Sun Protection-even in April, the sun was SO strong! Hats, light layers and sunscreen are a must!

2-Wildlife Awareness- fire ants are abundant, snakes are native to the area, and goodness knows what else! Don’t let them wander too far ahead in case there is an unwanted critter around!

3-Water and Snacks-I probably don’t need to say this, but you need water on this hike! And your kids will want snacks! It’s a gorgeous view at the top so pack enough to let the kids relax and eat/drink before heading back down!

4-Explorers-There were so many cool things we saw on the way. I wish I would have brought a little science kit with a magnifying glass and a little scavenger hunt! It would have made it way more fun for them!

5- Carriers- Kiddos under 4 will likely need to be carried at least some of the way. It’s about a 40 minutes hike, but it is STEEP! That combined with a few tricky spots you have to navigate makes a carrier super important for littles.

6- Proper Footwear- Closed toed shoes with traction. We saw a few people with flip flops, sandal type shoes. Totally not great for hiking (even though it’s not a hard hike) you need some traction and with that crazy wildlife I told you about, you are going to want to protect your toes!
